The New Yorker, a weekly newspaper published by Horace Greeley. The paper measures 9-1/4" by 12" and contains 16 pages. The paper has a 1-1/3 page article titled "Magnetic Discoveries" that describes Henry Hall Sherwood's discoveries in determining Latitude and longitude by his magnetic Geometer. The article describes the device and describes his plea to Congress for a patent as well as listing his discoveries in relation to the use of the magnet to dertime longitude and latitude. 1883 Elmer Sperry Invents Electric Light Machine $18.00 This is the February 3, 1883 issue of the
Wellsville Daily Reporter newspaper published in Wellsville, New York. It has an intersting 2/3 column, front page report, titled "A New Electric Machine" that is about Elmer Sperry of Cortland, New York inventing a new electric lighting machine (probably a generator - article isn't specific about the generator. He was ultimately offered a $1,000,000 for the patent. He was only 23 years old in 1883 and went on to become a noted inventor. Paper is in good condition. It measures 12-1/2" by 17" and contains 4 pages (2 sheets) - from a bound volume - some small binding chips at spine.

1891 Pyrogravure - Woodburning - Illustrated $16.00 This is the April 11, 1891 issue of the
Scientific American Supplement magazine, published in New York. It measures 11" by 16" and contains 16 pages. The front page illustrations and article are about pyrogravure, a new process for engraving on wood. The article describes the process and has two illustrations titled "Pyro-Engraving Apparatus" and "Mode of Using the Apparatus".
The magazine also has a 2-3/4 page article with 14 illustrations titled "Nickel In The Slot Machines". The article describes the operation of the newly developed coin operated vending machines and has many illustrations describing the mechanisms. The article describes machines for dipensing coffe, tea, cocoa, beverages, etc. Most of the illustrations show the inner workings of the machines - a couple show external views. Magazine is in good condition - quite clean, not brittle.

The American Journal of Science magazine published in New Haven, CT. It contains a 11" by 15" supplment color map titled "Limestone Areas of Westchester County" New York. The map shows town borders, railroads, the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, rivers, streams, etc. as well as the limestone deposits. The map is in very good condition. It is printed on 1 side only and could easily be removed from magazine to be framed. There is also an 18 page article about the limestone belt in Westchester County, NY. It measures 9" by 11-3/4" and contains about 36 pages. It has a brief but interesting notice of a new American patent for daguerreotype apparatus. The patent notice is shown in its entirety in the images below. The notice is of an invention by J. Brown of employing a diaphragm with an ornamental border which results in a decorative border around the photographic image. 1865 Early Winged Flight/Minneapolis/Long Rpt $18.00 This is the August 14, 1865 issue of
The Circular published by the Perfectionist communities of Wallingford, CT and Oneida, NY. The paper has an interesting eyewitness report of a successful early flight attempt near Minneapolis, MN. The attempt was by a David K. Smith. He constructed a set of wings (attached toi his body) and a special inflatable flying suit. He was then towed on a large kite (towed by a wagon) to the height of 1200 to 1500 feet. He then released from the kite and through the use of his artificial wings, glided safely to the ground. The article appears to be true. It is concluded by stating that inquiries to the character of Mr. Smith could be gained by contacting Hon. C. E. Vanderburgh, Judge of the District Court or by contacting the author at No. 26, Larmon Block, PO Box 6026, Chicago (his name was Walter V. Collins). Other people involved in the flight (wagon drivers, etc.) were James McLennan, Capt. Cobb, Patrick Riley and Andrew Ward. The paper is in good condition - not brittle.

1911 Breguet's 11 Passenger Airplane Photo & Rpt $16.00 This is the April 22, 1911 issue of the
Scientific American magazine. The magazine has a full page article with 5 photos and illustrations about Louis Breguet's multi-passenger airplane. He had just completed a successful 3 mile flight carrying 11 passengers. The article describes the machine and includes 3 illustrations of parts of the plane and two photos of the plane. Engineering News magazine. It shows the engine (apparently a steam driven water pump) designed by Thomas J. Whitman, M.A. Soc. C.E., Water Commissioner , St. Louis, MO and built by the Fulton Iron Works St. Louis, MO. Boston Evening Transcript newspaper published by Daniel N. Haskell. It has a report about a balloon ascension from Boston Common by the balloon "Washington". The aeronaut was Francis Copia, a Frenchman and he had two passengers, Mr. Seaver and Mr. Starkweather. The report describes the ascension that first landed at Winthrop to let off one of the passengers as the balloon could not gain enough altitude with three people on board. The journey continued until they landed at "Little Nahant" or Lynnn Beach. The paper is in very good condition - from a bound volume.
