This is the May 16, 1829 issue of the National Gazette and Literary Register published in Philadelphia, PA by William Fry. It has a 1/2 column front page report of the election of Cardinal Francis Xavier Castiglione as Pope Pius VIII. Paper is in good condition - very clean - not brittle. Paper measures 13" by 20" and contains 4 pages. Good condition.

This is the May 21, 1896 issue of The Independent, a 32 page, 11" by 15-1/2" newspaper published in New York. It has several reports about Japan. they are:
  • Front page report continued on page 2, 2-1//2 columns "The Three Japans" that describes the variety of topographical features in Japan and the social changes in Japan - the three Japans referred to in the titled are Old Japan, Official Japan, and New Japan - it also mentions "Christian Japan" that will be discussed in a later article
  • Japan - The Kumi- ai Churches in Session - 3/4 column report on the missionary work in Japan
  • TheOpening of Japan - 2-1/3 column review of the book by W. E. Griffis - "The Journals of Townsend Harris - First Envoy to Japan"

The report has a list of candidates from which the new Pope would be chosen. Paper is in good condition - not brittle - never bound.

This is a lot of two items. They are the February 28 and October 2, 1856 issues of The New York Observer newspaper by Sidney E. Morse & Co. The papers each have a long report about religion in New Orleans. The reports are:
  • Feb. 28, 1856 - "Religion In New Orleans" - 1+ column front page report about the condition of the churches in New Orleans
  • October 2, 1856 - "Protestantism In New Orleans" about the progess of Protestantism in New Orleans in the past 50 years
. The papers are in very good condition - not brittle - from a bound volume. The papers measure 18" by 25" and contain 4 pages each.
