1800's NY Socialist Community Newspaper Collection (7 Items)

This is a 7 item collection of newspapers (6 newspapers - 1 pamphlet) covering much of the period of the existence of John Humphrey Noyes' Perfectionist/Oneida Community, a socialist/communist community located in Oneida, NY and Wallingford, CT and originally in Putney , VT.

The pamphlet is a 24 page, 5-1/4" by 8" booklet titled "The Oneida Community - A Dialogue" that is a history of the Oneida Community in Oneida, New York. The booklet was written by Henry J. Seymour, one of the original members of the community and was published shortly after the community was disbanded in late 1879. Seymour describes the community and their religious views in an interview format. The first page of the booklet mentions the names of all of the newspapers published by the community from 1834 to 1879. Seymour's purpose was to document the existence of the community for future generations. Quite an interesting booklet in very good condition. I do not know the exact year this was published but will guarantee it to be from the early 1880's (we believe we have the only exisiting stock of these pamphlets - have never seen them anywhere else) .

The 6 papers range from the early 1840's to the late 1870's. The 6 papers are:

  • The Perfectionist published by Noyes in Putney, VT - very good condition - not brittle - very clean
  • The Spiritual Magazine - Oneida, NY - light foxing, otherwise good condition
  • The Free Church Circular - Oneida Reserve - some foxing, otherwise good condition
  • The O. C. Daily, very small (4" by 5") daily spiritual; publication published in Oneida - very good condition
  • The Circular published by the Oneida Communities - in Wallingford and Oneida - very good cond - never bound
  • American Socialist - published in Oneida, NY - near perfect condition - never bound

Regular price $95. - Monthly Special price $75.
