This is the May 8,1880 issue of The Graphic, an illustrated weekly magazine published in London, very similar in size and format to Harper's Weekly in the US. The magazine measures 11-1/2" by 15-1/2" and contains 24 pages. It has a 15" by 23" centerfold engraving titled "The Vienna Equestrian Festival" that has 2 views of the festival titled "The Gardener's Procession by Franz Russ" and The Butcher's Procession by Rudolph Huber". Print is dated 1880 in margin. Magazine has many other full page and smaller prints. Very good condition - from a bound volume.


20884 1880 History of Oneida Socialist Community - NY $18.00

This is a 24 page, 5-1/4" by 8" booklet titled "The Oneida Community - A Dialogue" that is a history of the Oneida Community in Oneida, New York. The booklet was written by Henry J. Seymour, one of the original members of the community and was published shortly after the community was disbanded in late 1879. Seymour describes the community and their religious views in an interview format. The first page of the booklet mentions the names of all of the newspapers published by the community from 1834 to 1879. Seymour's purpose was to document the existence of the community for future generations. Quite an interesting booklet in very good condition. I do not know the exact year this was published but will guarantee it to be from the early 1880's.

The magazine has a front page article and illustration of Charles Francis Adams, son of John Quincy Adams and Grandson of John Adams. The article gives a summary of his life. The article is continued on page 2 for most of the page. Magazine is from a bound volume - not brittle.

It measures 11 inches by 16 inches and contains 16 pages. The issue has a report and 2 full page illustrations of the new King and Queen of Italy - King Humbert and Queen Margaret (one of the King and one of the Queen). The magazine is in very good condition - very clean - not brittle - from a bound volume.


22951 1871 US Supreme Court Petition/Special Report $24.00

This is a special supplment to the May 1, 1871 issue of The National Bankrupt Register newspaper, published in New York by Audley W. Gazzam and the U. S. Law Association. The first four pages of this special supplment are a petition that had been recently presented to the Chief Justice and Associates of the United States Supreme Court. The petition contains a list of over 500 citizens names, mostly from New York but some from some of the surrounding states. They are petitioning for a better procedure for the notice of bankruptcies. They are petitioning that they are harmed because the bankruptices of companies and individuals are not published widely enough to notify all concerned regarding the bankruptcy. The paper measures 9" by 11-1/2" and contains 8 pages. Very good condition - from a bound volume.

They are the June, 1874, July, 1874, August, 1874, December, 1875, and February, 1877 issues of the periodical. They are a medical newsletter containing clinical lectures and medical news. They measure 6" by 9-1/2" and contain 16 pages each. Very clean, not brittle - never bound.

This is the May 25, 1878 issue of " The Illustrated London News ", an illustrated magazine published in London, England, very similar in size and format to Harper's Weekly published in the US. It measures 11 inches by 16 inches and contains 16 pages. The cover illustration is of the sons of the Prince of Wales in training in the Navy. There is a related article titled "The Young Sailor Princes" about Prince Albert Victor Christian Edward and Prince George Frederick Earnest Albert who were Naval cadets in training aboard the HMS Britannia. The magazine has several other illustrations including a double page centerfold titled "The British Fleet In the Sea Of Mamoras Searching For Torpedo Boats by the Electric Light On Board HMS Agincourt". The article describes a concert being given by Jenny Lind in Washington DC in which she sang "Hail Columbia" and Daniel Webster, seated in the audience, stood and sang parts of the song with her. This is the July, 1880 issue of The Edinburgh Review printed in New York by the Leonard Scott Publishing Company (it was common practice in this period for American publishers to reprint British magazines for distribution in the US - magazine is an 1880 US reprint of the magazine). This is the July 28, 1879 issue of The Daily city Item from Allentown, PA. It has a front page article about a fight between detective Llewelyn and Hagen and outlaws Middleton and Black George on the Niobrara River. Middleton was severely wounded, Black George was killed and Detective Hagen was wounded. Paper is in good condition - not brittle but is separated at spine (paper is in 2 sheets).

This is the August 16, 1873 issue of the Evening Telegraph newspaper published in Philadelphia by Dutton and Wentworth. The paper has a front page report about the discovery of gold in the Yellowstone region by a French exploring party. They were not after gold and did not pursue it but once word spread, outfits were being fitted to search for gold in the Little Wolf Mountain area in Wyoming about 30 miles east of Yellowstone Basin and also at Porcupine Creek between the Big Horn and Tongue Rivers. This is a lot of 3 items. They are the May 31, June 2, and June 3, 1879 issues of The Evening Telegraph newspaper published in Philadelphia. Each paper has at least one report on the Zulu War in Africa. Thje reports are:

28048 1876 Parson Brownlow On Jeff Davis/Andersonville $18.00

This is the March 7, 1876 issue of the Coldwater Republican newspaper published in Coldwater, Michigan. The paper has a 1-1/2 column front page report titled "Davis and Andersonville" that is a description of the Andersonville, GA Civil War Prison and also a description of the character of Jefferson Davis by Parson Brownlow. Brownlow was known as the fighting parson (he had been a Methodist minister) an anti-Confederate from the South who was imprisoned by the Confederates and later, after being released established the Knoxville Whig and Rebel Ventilator newspaper in Knoxville (prior to the war he was the editor of the Knoxville Whig). He also served as Governor of Tennessee and as a Senator. This report is from the Knoxville Chronicle - he was still active in the newspaper business and politics until his death in 1877. Paper is in good condition - not brittle - has some light damp stains - from a bound volume.


28056 1877 Jersey City NJ 2nd Universalist Church Rpt $18.00

This is the February 28, 1877 issue of The Cleveland Leader newspaper published in Cleveland, Ohio by the Leader Printing Company. The paper has a brief, but interesting, report about Phoebe Hanaford, a minister of the First Universalist Church of Jersey City whose services were terminated and her plan to establish a new church, the Second Universalist Church of Jersey City . She was supported by many of her parishioners and a committee was formed to establish a constitution and bylaws and to raise money for the new church. Committee members mentioned were Mr. Bostwick, Mr. Carey, Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Westervelt. The paper is in very good condition - not brittle - from a bound volume.

30944 1880 History of Oneida Community NY/10 Items $35.00

This is a lot of 10 items (all the same). They are a 24 page, 5-1/4" by 8" booklet titled "The Oneida Community - A Dialogue" that is a history of the Oneida Community in Oneida, New York. The booklet was written by Henry J. Seymour, one of the original members of the community and was published shortly after the community was disbanded in late 1879. Seymour describes the community and their religious views in an interview format. The first page of the booklet mentions the names of all of the newspapers published by the community from 1834 to 1879. Seymour's purpose was to document the existence of the community for future generations. Quite an interesting booklet - all are in very good condition. I do not know the exact year this was published but will guarantee it to be from the 1880-1882 period - most likely was published in 1880 right after the Community was disbanded (last regular publication of the community newspaper, The American Socialist was December, 1879). This booklets are on the same paper and use the same font as the American Socialist and were most likely printed at the Oneida press.

The ad shows an illustration of oil wells and storage tanks with a village in the background (Carboline was made from petroleum). 35797 1874 Edward Shippen Willing/Philadelphia Document $24.00

This is an 18" by 24" completely handwritten vellum indenture. The handwriting is neat and clear and easy to read. It transfers property from Edward Shippen Willing, gentleman of Philadelphia and his wife Alice B. to Thomas H. Powers, of Philadelphia, manufacturing chemist. The property was located on the south side of Walnut Street and extended to Chancellor Street in Philadelphia. This was a significant piece of property as the purchase price was $61,000 which was a considerable sum of money in 1874. The Willing's were a prominent family in early Philadelphia history. I believe this couple, Edward Shippen Willing and Alice B. Willing were the parents of Ava Willing who became the first wife of John Jacob Astor IV. She was also known as Lady Ribblesdale. The document is dated September 1, 1874. The document is in very good condition - well done and neatly written. Document has three wax seals. Guaranteed to be authentic - very suitable for framing.
