He held positions as county auditor, city attorney, and now was running for the Assemblyman from the 20th District. The paper was supporting him in his run for office and about 2/3 of the front page is devoted to the illustration of him and his biography. 1893 Slaughtering Seals - Bering Sea$16.00 This is the August 12, 1893 issue of
Scientific American Supplment magazine. The cover and associated article give an account of how the HMS Victoria was sunk when struck by the Camperdown in the Mediterranean on June 22, 1893. There is also a 2 page article with 4 large engravings of slaughtering seals in the Bering Sea.. The article talks about disputes between the US and Russia in the area over harvesting seals. The seal engravings are abut 6" by 9". The close-up (3rd image below is of the engraving in the lower left corner (see 2nd image) and is titled "Massacre Of Seals"). The article continues on another page (not shown) that has a map and a another engraving. This issue also has 3 pages devoted to the Columbian Exposition with several enravings.

The front page includes a letter from President Benjamine Harrison stating he could not attend, a front page letter from John Greenleaf Whittier, another from Julia Ward Howe. Other front page letters are from Louis Kossuth, Hon. Whitelaw Reid, Henry Clews, William McElroy, and John H. Farwell. Page 2 has a letter from Henry Cabot Lodge. Most of these letters have facsimile signatures. The Whittier letter is entirely in his hand (facsimile). It has a long front page report (1 full column on front page and 2 columns on page 2) about four people being killed an several wounded by a Lynch mod trying to lunch a Negro who was being held in jail. Charles Mitchel was accused of assaulting a Mrs. Eliza Gaumer . Mitchell was held in jail and was protected by the Sheriff and the local militia but the lynch mob finally got to him and killed him and also killing and wounding innocent bystanders in the process. This is a long fairly detailed report about the incident. Paper is in good condition - from a bound volume.

It has a 1/2 column ad offering for sale the estate known as Owl's Wood and owned by Frank Pixley, one of the pioneers of the Marin County area. He was also the editor of this newspaper. The ad describes the estate in quite a bit of detail. The paper has many interesting articles and many illustrated ads. The paper measures 11" by 15" and contains 16 pages - rag paper - not brittle - never bound.

The horses named are Lord Langford, Elvis, Countess, Majestic, Flying Dutchman, Lady Lamberton, Good Boy, Longfellow, Asetic, and Lord Gough.
