12/23/2008 - Newel Post Plant Stands

This is just a slightly different take on an old idea. I have seen plant stands or pedestals made from newel posts for many years. Most of those that I have seen though tend to be made to the full height of the newel post that was used. When shopping at flea markets and antique shops I keep an eye out for newel posts that are suitable to be cut in half at the center and still leave two usable pieces to be made into plant stands (see image below for an example).

This allows you to make two short plant stands from one newel post. The images below are of the finished plant stand and the left over piece that can be made into yet another plant stand the same height.

The top and bottom of the plant stand are just graduated squares of pine. Each piece is about 1-1/2" wider than the piece above it (bottom) or 1-1/2" narrower than the piece above on the top.
